Darth Vader is under his foot. The pose carries all the drama of a religious painting, but those two details send the story somewhere else entirely. White outlines suggest wings and a halo, while the figure\u2019s clothing and armor are rendered in careful shades of gray. The red cuts straight through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a good place to start with KOZO. The tattoo artist, whose full name is Eden Kozokaro, takes images we already know and gives them new relationships. A sculpture steps in front of a painting. A comic-book portrait interrupts a stone figure. A tiny person climbs toward a face that has become a building. Across his <a href=\"https:\/\/kozo.art\/skin\">Works on Skin portfolio<\/a>, familiar images become places where something can happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The frame is only a starting point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most engaging pieces brings Michelangelo\u2019s David together with the figure from Vermeer\u2019s Girl with a Pearl Earring. David stands outside the ornate frame. She leans toward him, her hands reaching into his space. The change is small enough to feel believable and strange enough to make you stop. A Barbie-like face takes over the Mona Lisa\u2019s pose, with pink script crossing the portrait. Darth Vader appears on a rearing horse, his raised lightsaber extending beyond a rectangular space scene. In the photographs, areas of open skin separate the compositions from the surrounding body. Frames establish edges that figures can cross. Color tends to pull attention toward a particular part of the scene: the pink lettering, a red blade, a spill of blue paint. There\u2019s plenty to look at without every inch demanding the same attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making room for the unexpected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quieter pieces deserve time, too. In one, blue paint runs from a tipped can down a broken classical bust. Behind it is a framed sky, with a bird perched on top. A tiny person stands near the base. That little figure changes the scale of everything around it. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/coolhunting.com\/culture\/interview-surrealist-tattoo-artist-kozo\/\">2021 interview with COOL HUNTING<\/a>, he said he studied drawing and painting through his teenage years and began tattooing at 17, with friends as his first clients. He also named Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Jacques-Louis David as influences, pointing to their persistence and work ethic as well as their paintings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His choice of scale had a practical side. Speaking with <a href=\"https:\/\/inkedmag.com\/original-news\/kozo-inkedmag\">Inked in 2020<\/a>, he explained that smaller tattoos let him bring his knowledge of classical painting to people who weren\u2019t ready to commit to a sleeve or a large piece. That approach helps explain the appeal of these compact scenes: a whole visual idea can live within a relatively contained space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final image in this selection slows things down.
